The Itch Factor of Eczema – More than Your Average Rash

If you’ve ever been in the middle of something and felt the familiar sensation of the itchy skin, you know how frustrating the unavoidable desire to scratch an itch somewhere on your skin at an inopportune moment can be. Having dry, itchy skin can be unpleasant, and the symptoms can usually lessen with the use an over the counter product, but dealing with a condition known as eczema can be overwhelming.

BLOGeczemapostEczema is a chronic inflammatory skin disease.  Also referred to as atopic dermatitis. Eczema’s name is derived from a Greek word meaning to fizz, bubble, or foam over. Characterized by an uncomfortable rash that is itchy and often red, eczema and can appear in different areas of the body. Some folks have the rash all over their bodies while others see the condition appear on the face, cheeks, chin, neck wrists and ankles, and inside the crease of areas that bend such as the elbows and behind the knees.

The rash can present differently for everyone with some sufferers reporting an itch so severe they scratch the skin until it bleeds in an attempt to cure what itches.  People have commented that the symptoms flare up depending on factors that include environmental, mental and physical. Eczema can afflict both children and adults, with a consensus that the symptoms include dry, red and itchy skin exacerbated by the scratching (eczema/atopic-dermatitis).

If you suffer from eczema, you are not alone.  Millions of people all over the world are afflicted with this seditious condition. Also, eczema and many other allergies appear to be on the rise. For example, eczema is much more widespread today than it was decades ago, particularly in children. What is the cause of this reported increase in eczema cases? There is speculation that elements such as poor diet, mental stress and environmental issues such as pollution encourage the rashes popping up in children and adults.

The positive note is there are many ways to treat the symptoms of eczema. As with most inflammatory skin disorders, there are effective medicinal treatments to help ease and manage the symptoms.  For example, there are corticosteroid creams to mediate the itching, drugs prescribed to ward off infection as well as medications you can take that affect your immune system, thereby easing the inflammation.  Also, there are oral medications and anti-itch drugs as well.

If you seek an alternative treatment, you can try relaxation techniques, behavior modification or biofeedback, light therapy, moist dressing packs as well as stress treatments such as acupuncture. There are also innovative companies who have created outstanding skin care products to lessen the severity of eczema symptoms, and provide an effective topical treatment for eczema. For example, Theresiensol is an Austrian company that offers a host of wellness products online. They’ve created a variety of topical skin products that not only nurture, but have a calming effect. Theresiensol’s all-natural oil has been praised for a natural remedy and a miraculous way to treat eczema by easing symptoms, reducing scars and inhibiting itching.

The key to managing your eczema symptoms is to find a treatment that works for you.  Whether you choose a traditional or alternative therapy, remember that you are not alone and have several options available to you.
